Which abilities should be honed first and foremost? We questioned 11 members of the Young Entrepreneur Council to identify the key competency that every small business owner should possess in order to handle daily operations. Below, they provided their responses.

1. Delegation

A lot of first-time business owners worry about delegating tasks as their company expands. There comes a moment when development is crucial, but no leader wants to be seen as the “idea guy” who is too lethargic to do anything. Instead than jumping around the workplace to show you’re not scared to roll up your sleeves, leadership is focusing on the big picture. Thought leaders have a very clear thesis and message to offer to inspire others, even if their story, product, or beliefs are unpopular. Although thinking leadership is equally as crucial, being a good leader is something you must do every day. Once you have the desire to create, inspire, and share, operations, technology, public relations, writing, and marketing skills will all come naturally. 3. Simple Communication Techniques

Although it may seem simple, the biggest and most persistent weakness I observe in founders and leaders is a lack of effective communication skills. Teams and organisations can be extremely vulnerable if there is a lack of communication. Leading by example is a key component of creating a culture where proactive, honest, and open communication are valued. This should go both ways and frequently involve getting input from clients, business partners, and employees. Negative attitudes may start to develop and spread across the organisation if this ability is lacking. 4. Initiative

5. Financial Education

The ability to grasp finances is crucial to every organisation. A wise business owner is aware of the costs associated with labour, sales, and other expenses. I worked with a customer who ran a weekly loss-making special for seven years without understanding that the stats told the real story. 6. Management

People and connections abound in businesses. Purpose is the main factor that keeps all different types of individuals linked and engaged, in my experience. What do they all aspire to? What are the objectives that the entire organisation is working toward? It is not enough to just write the company’s mission statement on the wall; everyone in the organisation has to be reminded of it virtually daily. How many people support and believe in the goal a leader sets out could be a good indicator of that leader’s strength. The company’s leaders must infuse inspiration into its mission. There must be a strong, overarching goal that all employees can support in light of all that each employee does within the organisation.
